Thirteen?

I wonder why many people believe that the number 13 is a bad number which will bring bad luck into their life. For me, a number is just a number. Anyway, what mythology does the superstition come from?

Personally, I do not consider any number or day unlucky. I have heard that the reason why the 13 is considered unlucky had to do with the last supper where there were 12 apostles and Jesus. You do the math.

I heard that Norse mythology played a role in the 13 superstition.
When the gods were having a banquet, Loki was not invited. So he crashed the party and berrated all those present. He even murdered a server.
He was then condemned and punished by the gods and was forever their enemy.
Loki was the 13th person at the banquet.

In the tale of "Briar Rose" by the Grimm Brothers, there are thirteen fairies in the kingdom, but only enough seats in the kings court to seat twelve. The thirteenth shows up anyway, and places the curse on the baby princess as punishment for leaving her out.

Is Hermes the 13th God to "be apart" of the Pantheon?
