Hypnos was the son of Nyx (Night) and the brother of
Thanatos (Death). He is variously described as living
in the underworld, in the land of the Cimmerians, or in
a dark, misty cave on the island of Lemnos. The waters
of Lethe, the river of forgetfulness and oblivion,
flowed through this chamber. Hypnos lay on his soft
couch, surrounded by his many sons, who were the
bringers of dreams. Chief among them were Morpheus, who
brought dreams of men; Icelus, who brought dreams of
animals; and Phantasus, who brought dreams of inanimate
things.

Sons of Hypnos: Morpheus is a cunning imitator of the
human form, skilled in representing the features and
the speech of men in dreams, as well as the clothing
and the accustomed words of each he represents.
Phobetor is the one who represents the forms of beasts,
or birds, or serpents, in men's dreams; and Phantasus
is in charge of putting deceptive shapes of earth,
rocks, water, trees, or other lifeless things in the
dreams of men.

Ovid wrote about his sons, the gods of dreams:
Morpheus, who can assume the appearance of any person;
Icelos, who can simulate the form of any animal; and
Phantasis, who can replicate any inanimate object. In
Ovid's version, it is Morpheus who goes to Alcyone in
her husband's dream-form. In earlier accounts, Oneiros
is the god of dreams and sends dreams through the Gates
of Hypnos: the Gate of Ivory, from which false dreams
travel, and the Gate of Horn, through which true dreams
pass.
