The legend of the eagle

What is the legend of the eagle on the banners of the legion? Is it true that if the eagle is gone then the legion will not win any battle that they go? What is the symbolism of the eagle on the first place?

Eagles are often associated with high rank and some people liken it to the phoenix. Of course there's a lot of symbolism attached to that, so I guess the eagle suggests victory, power and the ability to 'rise from the ashes'. I'm not sure about your other question though, sorry.

From what I understand the standard carrying the specific eagle of a Legion was loaded with symbolism for the soldiers who marched under the standard. So much so that their behaviour, mode of dress and manner of speech varied in relation to their proximity to the standard. It sounds like it was a cynical exercise in troop control by the generals to me ....
