Presents for the gods

Isn't it perfectly obvious that gods do not exist, at least not in the same way as material objects?

To Homer's audience this wasn't obvious. When Athena stepped onto the chariot with Diomedes he tells us that the axle creaked.

I start with the most obvious idea, and the one that makes sense to me. Which is that people have bodies, and the gods are people. So I assume that if they exist then they have bodies. I could be wrong, but I'd need to have reason to take the idea seriously.

That is actually my favorite part in the Iliad. Apparently gravity acted on them.
