Greeks had the best mythology, in my opinion (Rome just stole the stories, gave the gods new names, and hoped that no one would notice). If you're looking for material beyond that of Homer (Iliad/Odyssey), you can check out Rhodius' Argonautica, which tells the story of Jason and his quest for the golden fleece. Ovid's Metamorphosis is good also, along with Hesiod's Theogony. Apuleius' The Golden Ass is another piece of literature that I've heard is fun, but I've yet to explore.

Try Barbara Walker's Women's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets. Hyde's book Trickster Makes This World is excellent - comparing Hermes to Loki, and many other trickster archetypes.
