General slocum

In doing genealogy research, I stumbled upon a HUGE piece of relatively unknown history - that being the wreck of the General Slocum in NY. I was truly dumbfounded. I grew up in NY, and it was never mentioned - not in articles, not in local history, no where. This was at that time the BIGGEST disaster in New York City history, claiming the lives of many German Americans, and forever changed the face of the Bowery, yet it was never covered or discused. The History Channel did a documentary on it, and I missed it! Have you ever heard of this disaster?

Hi Everyone, just joined the forum tonight and saw this post. This is an incredible story about our German American ancestors, and how a picnic in upstate NY and a excursion on a paddle boat ferry changed so many lives. Many of the remaining greiving families could not stand to live in the area and pulled up stakes and headed West. It really is an amazing story.
