    Snopes.com

Snopes is wonderful. I hadn't a clue that it was a husband and wife team though-surely there are more stories posted to that site than two could research. Maybe they trickle in too slowly though and give them time. Either way, the site is an awesome resource.

    Myth assimilation

I didn't mean so much the religious stories, because I know that basically 95% of Christian stories came from earlier 'pagan' faiths. I do find it interesting though that so few believers in the faith realise that, and yet believe it whole heartedly.

    Reality tv

Another one here-I don't like reality TV. I hate all the wannabe star shows, but I do occasionally watch the Gordon Ramsey shows. He's a genius in the kitchen and a real beast to work for. Oh, I tell a lie! I like the airport shows too!

    Please help my brother

I personally would try praying to Apollo, the God of sanity and reason. I don't that it would do you any good of course, unless he was also able to grant you some kind of ear plugs...

    Rudyard kipling

I love the Just So stories, but I don't know of any link to mythology. At least, none that I have heard of. I'll do a little research and see if there is any. I personally think that he just had a wonderful imagination.

    I never knew...

I would have thought that quite contrary to luck, it would come down to a matter of that particular God's strength, and his control over whatever powers he has. No different than wrestlers win based on skill and strength, gods would too.

    Myth assimilation

How many myths of old, or of ancient cultures, do you know of being assimilated into the successive cultures? I know of the myths that seem to have become the Jesus story (Ossirris for instance) but what else has found its way into our every day lives?

    2012 mayan calendar

I remember not only that but other end of the world prophesies too. The Jehovah's Witnesses for instance predicted the end in 1914, and 1975. Members sold their houses to support themselves, gave up their jobs so that they could do more field service and 'save' more people! These poor people...

    I never knew...

I find this a very strange thought. After all, who is more powerful than the gods? Why would it be that a God or gods would need 'luck' on their side. Surely, they should be controlling any outcomes of even supposedly random events.

How do urban legends get started?

I personally believe that the more daft, modern ones like this are simply a case of either Chinese whispers, or people telling a story to deliberately try and scare someone. The story is effective and gets passed on.

    2012 mayan calendar

I always point out the fact that the Maya themselves had predictions that were to happen beyond 2012. If they didn't think that we would still be here then, they wouldn't be making predictions.

    Australian myth truths

The Australian Aborigines have their creation stories, the Dreamtime. It contains so much that is personal to them, regarding the local layout of the land and so on, so is there any real, true root to it?

    Biblical myths?

LegendofJoe-what a wonderful explanation! Thank you for taking the time to share your views. The fact that so many creation stories and faith systems share so many elements is the only reason that I have even the slightest doubt that maybe, just maybe there is a higher being. I am basically...

    Did you fear them?

When you were growing up, were you ever exposed to the local urban legends? If they were frequently told around you, did you fear them, or did you generally just take no notice of them?

    Cupid

I've never familiarised myself with the Cupid story. Was he a cherub of some kind, a young angel? Or was he just depicted as a cute little boy who didn't wear enough clothes? Who was his father?

    Reality vs myth

It's similar to the Turin Shroud. For years it was held up as being Jesus' shroud. Carbon dating proved it to probably have been a work of art of Leonardo De Vinci. Urban legends can be proved or disproved. True myths are more like creation stories, or other ways of fathoming the world that we...

    King arthur

That's the trouble-when movies try to do actual history, they generally aren't all that popular. Fiction sells, history does not sell nearly as well. It's a shame too, because there are a lot of lessons to be learned from both our history and our cultural myths.

    Why the resurgence in popularity?

I've long thought that the increase in popularity would cause this. People are now exposed, thanks to the internet, to things that they never would have been otherwise. We now get to learn about other faiths, and creation stories-and people find things that make a lot more sense than they were...

Diwrnod santes dwynwen hapus i pawb!

It depends on the usage I'm afraid, it's not that easy! For instance, Dwynwen is pronounced Dwin when. Welsh doesn't share the English alphabet, there are more letters and groupings and tense can change the pronunciation.

    Need help with this...

Or why he has one clawed hand, and then a normal hand at knee/foot level. There are no real elements of a particular culture that I can pick out, rather a general stylised look that appears like it is meant to be assumed to be something that it is not.
