Where do you all stand on reality shows? Do you like them or hate them? What is your general opinion on them?

I absolutely DETEST reality television! It seems like reality tv focuses entirely on all of the bad parts of our country! Our high teen pregnancy rate (Teen Mom). Our high obesity rate (Heavy, Biggest Loser). Our plethora of mental illness (Jersey Shore, Hoarders, Addicted). And then there are shows that prove every stereotype people have about Americans, that we're spoiled and uneducated as well as a number of other things (Toddlers in Tiaras, House Wives, Sisterwives).
With so many impressionable people (not just kids are impressionable) watching shows where women are getting rich because they're having more kids than they can handle we get people like Nadya Suleman the Octo-Mom. Where are her poor children now? Being neglected and living in fear of being seperated if they are taken away from their mother, which they should be.
There are other women like Bethany Storro who poured acid on her own face just so she could be famous. Or men like Richard Heene who pulled the ballon boy hoax just so he could get famous.
Nothing good comes from reality television. My sister loves it, but I prefer to steer clear of crap like that.

I have a sister who likes those shows too (though not Toddlers in Tiaras, thank god!). But she doesn't get them on her television, so she has to come over here to watch them -- and I HATE them! Whenever she's here the TV is clogged with trashy, trashy shows. I hate it. (It's my mother's house, though, so it's really not my place to complain.)
I like American Idol, but that's about it. It's the shows like Say Yes to the Dress and What Not to Wear that I can't stand. There's no entertainment value in them that I can see.

I'm pretty sure we've already gone through the whole Toddlers in Tiaras thing, but just to say it again, I freaking hate that show! All of those women and kids need to have some sense knocked into them because they're all nuts!
...
My mom loves Say Yes to the Dress; I'll admit I watched it for a while too when my sister was planning her wedding. She used to be a fan of What Not toWear also, but she didn't like how offensive the hosts tended to be to the people on the show. I personally have never watched American Idol, but the restaurant that I worked at during high school and college always had it on the plasmas! Luckily I usually worked in the part of the dining room showing sports so I never had to hear it.
My sister controls the tv whenever she comes home for visits during the holidays. She will take over the DVR so that all of her programs are recording and I'm missing mine! I celebrate once she leaves by deleting all of her crappy television shows. she asked me to watch Sister Wives with her (my first time watching a reality show) and I couldn't take it. I was afraid my eyes would start bleeding!
I miss the days when tv was tv and reality was what you lived every day. People watch tv to get away from reality not to see how other people are screwing theirs up. I guess I'm just becoming a stick in the mud in my old age (23 is the new 43;)).

We have been through it many times. And I totally, 100% agree. It is a horrible, horrible show!

That's not fair!! Not fair at all! Fortunately my sister doesn't do that! It's your place, right? so you should get some say in what goes on the TV, and certainly what's recorded. You shouldn't have to put up with that. Surely your sister can record on her own TV while she's away? I would think.
If you don't mind me asking, what's Sister Wives?

I feel the same way, and I've been asking myself the same thing: What is the point in watching other people attach their lives to another object by an inclined plane wrapped helically around an axis? Maybe it's how some viewers feel better about their own lives? Others I have no idea. They're disgusting anyway, those shows. And I don't see how one can compare their own life like that to such... idiots.:)

She can I'm sure, but she is my older sister and when she visits she is a guest. The way I was brought up was that, when you have guests, they get rank:) It's annoying sometimes, but I endure it anyway and luckily it's usually no more than a weekend of mind-rotting television trash.

Ha Ha. I love your phraseology:D
I posed the same question to friends of mine who watch reality tv; the way the feel about it is that it's a nice way to unwind. Watching people act crazy and senseless and irrational gives them a feeling of "I'm glad that's not my life". My sister says she watches reality television because she likes to laugh at other people's idiosyncrasies.

I used to watch Hell's Kitchen occasionally. Being distanced from it now, in hindsight I see it as an extremely stupid and mean-spirited show. I don't really watch TV anymore, although I sometimes catch sporting events and old TV serials (such as MacGyver) on the computer.

I could barely get through the whole sneak peek. It looks just absolutely foul!

One weekend of trash television isn't too bad. I may be looking to buy a bullet and rent a gun by the end, but that's just me.;)

Thank you.

I'll ask my sister why she likes them so much, because I truly do not know. I'll get back to you.:)

I watched Food Genius or Sweet Genius for the first time the night before when I couldn't sleep, nothing else was on. I didn't think it was too terrible except I thought the judge was kind of a jerk, but I like watching cooking shows; I like Paula Deen. All in all I was still alive at the end of the show, but I still don't much care for reality television.
I don't get much chance to watch any tv except late at night and usually by the end of the day I've passed out, but on rare occasions I get to catch up on some shows that I like. One show that I think is amazing is River Monsters. I don't know if that's considered reality tv, I don't like to think of it as that, but I think Jeremy Wade is awesome. I really like the History Channel also, but been getting overrun with reality tv lately also.

I'm guilty of still watching that show.
