What's your favorite urban legend?

Do you have a favorite urban legend? Although the Internet has taken them to a whole new level, my favorite one is still "Bloody Mary." It's just scary enough to be spooky and old enough that it has to have some basis in fact.

I like a lot of them. There are too many to just like one, that's why they continue to be told on and on throughout history. We remember the ones we like and they continue on through our children, if we teach them.

I like the one with the couple making out in the car and the guy goes out to check and never comes back. The woman later finds scratches on the car. Something about a guy with a hook. Anyone remember it better than me?

I like "Bloody Mary" too, though I also like any pertaining to the Grim, or Black Dog. "Aren't You Glad You Didn't Turn On the Lights" and the one about the lady in white ghost wandering school halls also give me shivers -- which I like.

As told by David Emery
THE HOOK MAN
A teenage boy drove his date to a dark and deserted Lovers' Lane for a make-out session. After turning on the radio for mood music, he leaned over and began kissing the girl.
A short while later, the music suddenly stopped and an announcer's voice came on, warning in an urgent tone that a convicted murderer had just escaped from the state insane asylum — which happened to be located not far from Lovers' Lane — and that anyone who noticed a strange man lurking about with a hook in place of his right hand should immediately report his whereabouts to the police.
The girl became frightened and asked to be taken home. The boy, feeling bold, locked all the doors instead and, assuring his date they would be safe, attempted to kiss her again. She became frantic and pushed him away, insisting that they leave. Relenting, the boy peevishly jerked the car into gear and spun its wheels as he pulled out of the parking space.
When they arrived at the girl's house she got out of the car, and, reaching to close the door, began to scream uncontrollably. The boy ran to her side to see what was wrong and there, dangling from the door handle, was a bloody hook.
Analysis: Folks have been telling the "hook-man" story since the 1950s, and indeed the implicit moral message — "Sex is naughty, and bad boys and girls will be punished!" — seems more appropriate to that simpler, more naive era. Just as this moral has come to be parodied in horror films (where formerly it was delivered with morbid solemnity), its "bygone" relevance has taken the teeth out of the cautionary tale over time.

Furrys, apparently, are part animal part human hybrids. Some people who call themselves furrys are just role players. Some have online avatars that resemble animal/humans. Also furrys can be referred to as fur fans. They're just anthropomorphic animals behaving like humans.
The only part Greek myth plays in this is that some people look at characters like Lycaon or Actaon or the Hydra and Chimera and believe that they were the original furrys. There are lots of types of furrys from comic book characters to porn stars. I suppose the princess fancies herself as either an actual half human/animal hybrid or she is just a fan of the art...

That reminds me of "The Island of Dr. Moreau", in which the crazy doctor of the title turns animals into humans, or at least tries to - rather unsuccesfully.

I thought of the "splicers" from the cartoon series Batman Beyond. They took animal DNA like a drug to just to enhance their own physical attributes. Cat DNA to make your eyes look pretty or like gorilla DNA to make yourself stronger, but then they started mutating and became more animal than human. Itd be an unsettling idea to know that you could bump into an alligator in the theater. Creepy.
In the movie the only thing keeping them tame were the drugs and collars and they broke free from those. What would a person do if they met a half lion half man in a dark alley?

I believe Curt Connors from Spiderman turned into something like that -- Lizard. Not an alligator per se, but definitely something related.

A lizard definitely. After his arm grew back the rest of him mutated as well and he turned into a giant reptile-like monster. I think there was a bit of a difference though; Connors still retainede his intellect it was just that he lost the rest of himself and became more monster than man...though these days what's the difference. But Parker was able to cure him. I don't think the monsters from Moreau were as lucky if I remember correctly.

Very true, Moreau's "people" kind of doomed themselves.
